His main contributions are in the creation of modified-release dosage forms, he is the creator of the first Bulgarian combined analgesic &#8216;Benalgin&#8217;. He introduced biopharmacy as a science and practice for the first time in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shekerdzhiyski was born in1934 in Dupnitsa. He graduated in pharmacy from the Higher Medical Institute (now MU-Sofia) in 1956 and in chemistry from Sofia University in 1968. His entire professional career as a lecturer and scientist took place at the Faculty of Pharmacy at MU-Sofia (1969-2004), where he founded and chaired the Department of Industrial Pharmacy (1986-2002).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He specialized in a number of pharmaceutical faculties and research laboratories in Budapest, Bratislava, Germany, Sweden, etc. He introduced biopharmacy as a science and practice for the first time in Bulgaria, including the &#8220;dissolution rate&#8221; test. He made a major contribution to the creation of modified-release dosage forms (i.e., whose action lasts 8-12 hours). He developed the technology for the production of numerous medicinal products in Bulgaria and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He participated in the development of dozens of medicines, mainly based on amino acid salts (Pamaton, Oxyrich, Magnerich) and polybacterial immunostimulants (Respivax, Urostim, Dentavax), as well as the first Bulgarian combined analgesic &#8211; Benalgin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Shekerdjiyski participated as a leader in 4 space experiments on the topic of changing taste sensations during space flights. He was a national consultant on dosage form technology in the years 1996-2000, and is also intensively involved in the technology of food supplement production. He has over 100 scientific publications in Bulgaria and abroad. He is a member of the authorship team of the textbook &#8220;Technology of Drugs&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is the Vice-President of the Bulgarian Association for Pharmaceutical Technologies, a member of the Bulgarian Association for Drug Information, the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Shekerdzhiyski has been&nbsp;Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy in the period 1996-2000. During this period the scientific and educational laboratories of the Faculty of Pharmacy began to be reconstructed and renovated with modern technology and equipment. Under his leadership, the Bulgarian Student Scientific Pharmaceutical Society (BSSPS) was founded, and students began to travel to scientific events abroad. It was Prof. Shekerdzhiyski&#8217;s&nbsp;initiative that&nbsp;the graduation of pharmacy students was organized as a formal ceremony for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the eminent scientist was awarded the Order of Stara Planina, 1st degree by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2026, Prof. Shekerdzhiyski also received the Honorary Badge of the Patent Office on the occasion of 50 years since the patenting of the drug &#8220;Benalgin&#8221;.
