The 2026/2027 academic year for international students at the Medical University of Sofia commenced today with a formal ceremony held in the Anatomy Auditorium of the Medical-Biological Complex.
This year, a total of 529 students from 40 countries—both within and outside the EU—have been admitted to English-language programs across all units of MU-Sofia. Notably, this includes the first-ever cohort of students enrolling in the Nursing program taught in English; these 44 students will pursue their studies at the Faculty of Public Health “Prof. Dr. Tzecomir Vodenicharov, DSc”.
The first-year students filled the auditorium to hear welcoming remarks from the university leadership, represented by the Rector, Prof. Boycho Landzhov, MD, PhD, and the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Anzhelika Velkova-Monova, DSc, who presided over the ceremony.
The event was attended by the university’s executive leadership, as well as deans, vice-deans, and directors of the various academic units within the institution.
The Rector congratulated the first-year students on their choice of profession and university. He encouraged them to explore Bulgarian culture, urged them to support one another and grow together throughout their studies, and expressed his hope that they would contribute to the advancement of the university community. Welcoming remarks for the first-year students were delivered by Zakhari Vlaykov, Chairman of the Student Council at MU-Sofia, as well as by Amin Fayed, a sixth-year Medicine student representing the university’s international students.
The first-year students also had the opportunity to take souvenir photos at a special photo booth before heading to their respective faculties for the opening of the academic year.
