Start of the 2024/25 academic year for international students at MU-Sofia

The beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year for the international students at the Medical University – Sofia was given yesterday with a solemn ceremony in the Anatomical Auditorium of the Medical-Biological Complex.

The new students filled the hall to hear the welcoming words of the university management – the Rector, Prof. Dr. Boycho Landzhov, MD, the Vice Rector for International Integration and Project Financing, Prof. Ventsislava Pencheva, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine , Prof. Dimitar Bulanov. 

The Chairman of the OS of MU-Sofia, Prof. Dr. Raina Gergova, the Assistant Rector Prof. Krasimira Markova, the General Secretary Dr. Vidin Kirkov, Vice Rectors, Deans of faculties and Directors of units at the university also honored the ceremony.

The host, Prof. Pencheva, was the first to greet the new students from the EU and third countries, drawing their attention to the fact that they are already a part of “an environment where the modern vision of the future is built on the solid foundations of tradition”. She briefly presented them with the opportunities for development in the university’s international networks.

The Rector congratulated the freshmen with the noble professions they chose to commit to – medicine, dental medicine and pharmacy. ‘We are proud that our university has highly qualified teachers, cutting-edge scientific research, and great opportunities for clinical practice’, he underlined.

Prof. Bulanov warned the students that “the next six years will be the most difficult, but – certainly – the most rewarding years of your life”, in which they will have to cultivate self-discipline and will for constant learning.

The General Secretary of the Student Council at MU-Sofia, Anastasia Barbukova, as well as a prominent representative of the international student community at the university – Anna Shahid, 6th year, majoring in medicine, also offered words of encouragement to the freshmen. Mrs. Shahid wished the freshmen: “Never let someone else’s light dim the spark within you.”

This year the new students in English language education of MU-Sofia are a total of 501 people from 44 EU and non-EU countries. 320 of them will study “Medicine”, 147 will study  “Dental Medicine”, and 34 students will study “Pharmacy”.
