Research and teaching activities:

Teach “Social Medicine” in Bulgarian and English to medical students, as well as teaches 3 more disciplines in the master’s and bachelor’s programs at the Faculty of Public Health “Prof. Dr. Ts. Vodenicharov, MD” at MU-Sofia.
Scientific supervisor of 12 successfully defended PhD students and more than 150 master’s degree students. Scientific consultant of 30 defended PhD students in various fields of clinical medicine.
Prof. Velkova’s research work is in the field of comparative analysis of public health in European countries, mortality preventable with health interventions, clinical epidemiology, health promotion.
Author and co-author of more than 200 scientific publications in Bulgaria and abroad, 3 monographs, incl. one abroad, 7 textbooks and teaching aids in social medicine, health epidemiology, health promotion strategies.
Prof. Velkova’s scientific works have over 600 citations, of which 527 by foreign authors.
She has an h-index of 9.
Member of the Board of Directors and Scientific Secretary of the Bulgarian National Institute of Public Health.
Author and leader of 3 educational and infrastructure projects with European funding.
She is a leading researcher and participant in 7 institutional and 5 international research and educational projects.
She is the initiator and first chairman of the National Network for Global Health in 2012.
Creator and methodological leader of the Student Network “Air for Health” at MU-Sofia.

Deputy Dean for International Activities and Projects of the Faculty of Public Health “Prof. Dr. Ts. Vodenicharov, MD”, MU – Sofia.
4 terms as Head of Department, Deputy Dean for Academic Activities of the Faculty of Public Health and Deputy Rector for International Cooperation at MU-Pleven.
Member of the Control Council and the Council of Medical Science of MU-Sofia.
Prof. Velkova has been a certified quality auditor since 2004 and has been an expert of the NEAA for 20 years, having been the head of expert groups for program and institutional accreditations.

Awards:

She has received numerous honors and academic awards “Golden Panacea” from MU-Sofia for special contributions in the medical and social field.
