European University INGENIUM

Medical University – Sofia becomes part of a new generation European University

Medical University – Sofia is the only HEI in Bulgaria that becomes part of the IngEniUm project. It is a consortium of ten HEIs in Europe, coordinated by the University of Oviedo, Spain.

The initiative is of the EC and is part of the ambitious project to build a common European education area by 2025. The remaining participants besides the University of Oviedo and MU-Sofia, are the Karlshrühe University of Applied Sciences (Germany), the G. d’Annunzio Chieti-Pescara University (Italy), the University of Thessaly (Greece), Skövde University (Sweden), Lodz University of Technology (Poland), Rouen Normandie University (France), Cork Institute of Technology (Ireland) and Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iași (Romania).

The project aims to create an international interdisciplinary campus in which to obtain “open academic degrees”. The participating HEIs will be connected in a European university network, which will give them a significant competitive advantage, will issue common diplomas, will share resources. Each student will choose its own academic curriculum by combining subjects offered at the partner institutions. In addition to the classical academic degrees within one scientific field, there will be innovative degrees that combine knowledge in different fields. They will combine knowledge in bio-engineering sciences (biotechnology, chemistry, biomedicine, etc.), competences in computer science, data processing (IT), oral and written communication, ethics, history and philosophy of science, studying in foreign languages.

Medical University – Sofia has been actively working on the project since last year. It was coordinated between the Erasmus + offices of the participating universities and received the approval of the Rectors, and above all of the official authorities, represented by the mayors of the localities and ministers of education in the countries concerned, for the development of a future interdisciplinary and multinational campus.

IngEniUm has a 3-year funding period to fulfill its strategic vision for the next 10-year period.

This project for a network of European Universities has been piloted by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ Programme since the autumn of 2017. It has the ambitious goal of creating a common cross-border university alliance within the EU, allowing each student to choose which courses to enroll, when and for what periods to study in one of the HEIs, and finally to receive a new type diploma, which is valid to the countries where the universities are located.
In the second half of 2020, the IngEniUm project will be evaluated by the EC and, if approved, will receive European funding and finally to receive a new type diploma, which is common to the countries where the universities are located.
