Corresponding Member Prof. Dr. Tsvetalina Tankova, MD, Head of the Department of Endocrinology at the Faculty of Medicine at MU-Sofia received the Grand Prize of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for 2025. The prize for outstanding achievements in the field of life sciences and high international recognition was awarded to Prof. Tankova at the solemn meeting on the occasion of the 156th anniversary of the founding of the academy. The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva, personally presented the award statuette.
Prof. Tankova announced that she was proud to receive the award of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – the most prestigious, oldest and most significant scientific organization in Bulgaria.
“The award is also a recognition for medicine, and according to Hippocrates, medicine is the noblest art,” she added.
Prof. Tankova is a Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, a leading researcher and clinician in the field of diabetes, a respected lecturer at the Medical University of Sofia, where she has held a number of leadership positions over the years. Her scientific interests are focused on the study of the pathogenesis of prediabetes and the identification of new diagnostic and prognostic markers for screening, monitoring and treatment of the disease. She is among the authors who signed the Vienna Declaration on Screening for Prediabetes, she is one of the five experts who developed the behavioral algorithms of the European and American Associations of Prediabetes and Diabetes. Currently, Prof. Tankova is the Head of the Diabetology Clinic at the University Hospital of Endocrinology “Acad. Ivan Penchev”.
