Night of scientists at the Medical University – Sofia – 30.09.22

For another year, the Center for Molecular Medicine at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Biochemistry in MU-Sofia will take part in the European Night of Scientists. The event will take place on September 30, 2022. and is realized within the framework of the SEARCH project, financed by the European Commission for the “Marie Sklodowska-Curie” activities of the Horizon 2022 Program. Young researchers will be able to visit the scientific workshops related to the exhibition at 11 locations in the city of Sofia and at over 25 places in the country. The program of the European Night of Scientists 2022 includes interesting and fun demonstrations, role-plays, lectures and a variety of other activities, among which glass will be the focus.

You can see the entire program of the European Night of Scientists HERE

Follow the event from the Facebook page live from 18:00 to 21:00. at this link: https://www.facebook.com/ResearchersBG

Here is the program of events at Medical University – Sofia:

Center for Molecular Medicine, Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine

17:00 – 17:30 – The path from reading the human genome to personalized medicine. Bulgaria in the “Genome of Europe” project

What are our genes? What is the human genome? How can we explore it? What information do we get about our health, disease and background? What is the “Genome of Europe” project and what is Bulgaria’s participation in it? Why does our genome benefit society?

Learn from Prof. Dr. Radka Kaneva, teacher of biochemistry and pathobiochemistry of students of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and of molecular biology and genetics in the master’s program in medical and bioinformatics and executive manager of the Center for Molecular Medicine of the MU – Sofia since its establishment in 2006, and by Prof. Dr. Ivanka Dimova – lecturer at the Department of Medical Genetics of the Sofia University, head of the Genomic Diagnostics Laboratory at the Center for Molecular Medicine, Sofia University and a genetic consultant there.

17:30-18:30 – Genetic quiz

What do you know about genetics and the human genome? Take part in this fun quiz with prizes prepared by Nevyana Ivanova, Asst. Daniela Pencheva, Gergana Stancheva, Martina Vasileva and Martin Georgiev.

Dr. Nevyana Ivanova is a biologist-geneticist and database analyst at the Center for Molecular Medicine, who is involved in the processing of next-generation sequencing data with main scientific interests in the field of rare genetic diseases, neurological diseases, genetic bases of epilepsy and diagnostics in hereditary diseases by next-generation clinical exome sequencing, whole exome sequencing (WES), whole genome sequencing (WGS).

Dr. Kunka Kamenarova is a geneticist at the Center for Molecular Medicine at the Department of “Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry” at the Faculty of Medicine of the Sofia University. The main areas in which he works are genetics of eye diseases and genetic diagnosis of inherited diseases with research interests in the field of genetics of eye diseases and genetic diagnosis of inherited diseases by next-generation clinical exome sequencing, whole exome sequencing (WES), whole genome sequencing (WGS).

Children’s corner: Activities for children – drawing, modeling on the topic of Genetics, cells, genes and molecules.

Quiz: Why do children look like their parents?

Prizes for the best drawing and model, as well as the most original answer to the question.

18:30-20:00 – SEARCH Laboratory

Tour and demonstrations of techniques by young scientists, in the genomics, next-generation sequencing, microarray analysis, metabolomics, bioactive substance analysis, proteomics and cell culture laboratories

20:00 – 20:30 – SEARCH cafe: Biobanks – an investment in the future

What are biobanks? What, how and how long can we store for research? The role of biobanks for personalized medicine and population studies. Who owns our DNA and genetic data and how do we protect it? Do not miss this meeting with Prof. Radka Kaneva, Asst. Darina Kachakova,

As. Daniela Pencheva and Ass. Dr. Darina Kachakova. Dr. Darina Kachakova is a biologist-geneticist at the “Center for Molecular Medicine” at the Department of “Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry” at the Faculty of Medicine of MU-Sofia and a specialist in “Biochemistry” at the Department of “Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry” at the Faculty of Medicine of MU-Sofia with main interests in the field of next-generation sequencing of hereditary diseases. As. Dr. Daniela Pencheva is the laboratory manager of the “Center for Molecular Medicine” of the Sofia University, an assistant in Medical Biochemistry and a biologist-geneticist at the Laboratory of Genomic Diagnostics with main interests in the genetics and genomics of oncological diseases, molecular pathology, genome sequencing technologies including next-generation sequencing in the diagnosis of hereditary diseases, personalized medicine and molecular markers for targeted therapy.

20:30-21:00 – SEARCH cafe: Genomic technologies for personalized medicine – how are we useful to society

Bringing personalized medicine into practice using state-of-the-art technologies – a new paradigm in which medical treatment can be tailored based on an individual’s genetic profile, thanks to technologies that study the structure and function of genes. What are molecular biomarkers? How do we use them for risk prediction, refinement of diagnosis, prognosis and choice of therapy in the treatment of diseases in our practice?

Learn from Dr. Rumiana Dodova, molecular biologist at the Genomic Diagnostics Laboratory/Molecular Medicine Center. He defended the educational and scientific degree of doctor in molecular biology at the Medical University, Sofia on the topic “Influence of genetic and genomic changes on the development of breast cancer in the Bulgarian population”. Winner of a diploma in honor of the 1st of November for the most successful scientific development in the scientific field of medicine, medico-biological direction, funded by Medical University – Sofia with main interests in the field of genetics, epigenetics and personalized medicine in oncological diseases, DNA repair new generation technologies for genetic analysis, biobanking, population genetics, development of molecular biological screening programs for the prevention and treatment of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.
