The start of the new academic year 2020/2021 at the Medical University – Sofia was solemnly given today at a grand ceremony. Official guests were the Mayor of Sofia Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova, the Minister of Education Krassimir Valchev, the Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Kostadin Angelov, the Chairman of the Bulgarian Medical Association Dr. Ivan Madjarov, the members of the Board of Trustees of MU-Sofia, directors of the University Hospitals .
The Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Carolina Lyubomirova greeted the present guests, students and teachers and gave the floor to the Rector of MU-Sofia Acad. Prof. Lachezar Traykov, MD, D.Sc. “In this unusual year for all of us, Medical University – Sofia enters the educational process with the will to modernize and digitalize education. I wish success to all our students,” said Academician Traykov in his address to the 103rd class of the oldest medical school in the country.
The first-year students, who number 1167 this year, were also greeted by the mayor of Sofia, Mrs. Fandakova. The Ministers of Education and Health, as well as the Chairman of the Student Council, Vidin Kirkov, wished them good luck.
For the specialties in Medicine, Dental medicine and Pharmacy, the students who have successfully passed the admission exams are 420, and seven of them are full excellent students. Traditionally, they personally received a gift from the Rector – stethoscopes and blood pressure monitors. First-year student Dorina Popova gave a welcoming speech on their behalf.
Congratulations for the new academic year were sent by the Education Committee of the National Assembly, the Rector of Sofia University and the Rector of the Medical University of Plovdiv.
