The ranking, developed by the team of Prof. John P. A. Ioannidis (link) from Stanford University, uses data from Scopus (Elsevier) and bibliometric indicators to distinguish the scientists with the strongest impact on world science. It shows the top 2% of influential scientists from 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields. The ranking is based on standardized information on citations, citations excluding auto citations, H-index, Hm-index, corrected for co-authorship, as well as for citations of articles in different authorship positions. The ranking is divided into two – for 2024 and for overall career development.

Prof. Irini Doychinova and Prof. Irena Kostova from the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Medicine have been in the ranking for years (see HERE and HERE), and are now in the Top 1% of the most influential scientists in the world based on their lifetime career contribution. This year, they were joined in the group of leaders by Prof. Lyudmila Boyanova from the Department of Medical Microbiology of the Faculty of Medicine. In 2021, she was in the Top 2% in the same ranking.

Assoc. Prof. Dimitrina Zheleva-Dimitrova from the Department of Pharmacognosy and Prof. Ivan Dimitrov from the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy are the new names from MU-Sofia included in the category for contribution in the past 2024.

This year, 91 Bulgarian names appear in the ranking. The fact that 6 of them are lecturers from the Medical University – Sofia proves the high level of professionalism and significant scientific activity developed by the academic community at the MU-Sofia and its Faculty of Pharmacy.
